Real-time image registration for prostate biopsy

Standard 3D ultrasound probe do not allow real-time acquisition of volumes. This is why we develop a new method for registration of a “live” 2D image of the medical gesture (for instance a prostate biopsy) to a reference volume. Our hybrid registration method simultaneously maximizes the similarity of 2D and 3D features automatically extracted SIFT, Harris corner for instance – cf. image) and minimizes the distance of paired features. We propose a variant of ICP. It has been extensively tested on real clinical data. Work in progress concerns the real-time guidance of the clinician using such information.

Registration example. (a) 2D Image acquired during a biopsy (the red arrow shows the biopsy needle). (b) Corresponding image extracted from a reference 3D image after registration (residual error after registration 1.48mm; before registration 9.31mm). (c) Image extracted fro the 3D image using the « gold standard » transformation.
