Comparing 2D versus 3D US-guided prostate biopsies

We have set-up a comparative study on prostate phantoms in order to evaluate the potential advantage of 3D ultrasound (US) versus 2D during US-guided biopsies. A phantom has been specifically designed and a protocol was prepared. Each operator punctured 24 copies of the phantom: one for each of the 12 biopsy samples and one for 2D and for 3D. The use of one phantom per biopsy avoided any bias related to the possible visibility of a previous biopsy that could help 3D localization. We quantitatively measured the ability to reach each of the 12 regions to be sampled with the two types of US guidance. Different types of operators (urologists, radiologists) with different expertise participated. Significant advantage was found in the 3D US-guided group.
